In the 12th century medieval pins became very thin and delicate in their construction. This was because they were made from drawn wire, with the head manufactured separately. The medieval pin head in turn then became smaller and plainer. As a result not many have survived today for sale as artefacts because they are not durable in the ground. In the medieval period smaller lighter pins would have been popularly used to fasten ladies veils or silk garments.
