The military crises were so severe to central government that it was possible for Postumus, the commander of the Rhine legions, to rebel and keep imperial forces in check for almost a decade. He ruled Gaul, Spain and Britain successfully until 268 when his troops assassinated him near Mainz in Germany. His successors, Victorinus, Tetricus I and Tetricus II, were less able men and in 274 the emperor Aurelian re-absorbed the rebel provinces and restored central control to the whole Empire. James R.
